Kansas City has a way of making room for people. A new neighbor shows up in Brookside, a friend of a friend gets introduced at a coffee shop, and before long they feel like part of the place. That is how we want Teresa Gomez, PLPC, to feel at gokc, and how we hope you feel when you reach out to her.
We are happy to welcome Teresa to the gokc team and to the larger community of Kansas City therapists who care about helping people heal. If you are a potential client, this post is a chance to get to know her before you ever send an inquiry. If you are a fellow therapist, we hope it helps you picture who she is and who she may be a good fit for.
Meet Teresa Gomez, PLPC
Trauma & Narcissistic Abuse Therapist
Teresa is a bilingual (English and Spanish) therapist and Certified Narcissistic Abuse Treatment Clinician (NATC) with 20+ years of experience across nonprofit education, community mental health, and private practice. She earned her Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Avila University. She is also trained and certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and she uses Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help clients process distressing experiences.
What stands out most is how she describes her work. Teresa believes that healing begins when we feel truly seen, heard, understood, and accepted for who we are. Her approach is rooted in compassion, empathy, and authenticity, and in the belief that everyone deserves a safe, inclusive, and nonjudgmental space to explore their experiences and rediscover their sense of self-worth.
She sees clients in person at our Brookside office, or online if you live in Missouri. Clients in Kansas, including Prairie Village, Leawood, and Overland Park, meet with her in person at Brookside.
How Teresa Can Help Women
Many women come to therapy carrying a lot at once: anxiety that does not switch off, low mood, grief, big life transitions, and sometimes health concerns that make everything feel harder. Teresa supports women navigating anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and hormonal-related concerns such as PCOS, infertility, and menopause, with a holistic approach to care.
Hormonal shifts can affect mood, sleep, and how we feel in our own bodies. If you have ever felt that no one was taking those pieces seriously, a therapist who is comfortable talking about them directly can make a real difference. You do not have to explain why it matters. You can just start where you are.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, you may also find our guide to trauma therapy at gokc helpful, since many women we meet are also carrying old hurts that shape how they treat themselves today.
Healing From Narcissistic Abuse and Difficult Relationships
Teresa's specialty is trauma, including childhood and intergenerational trauma, emotional abuse, narcissistic abuse, and the lasting effects of difficult or antagonistic relationships. As a Certified Narcissistic Abuse Treatment Clinician, she has specialized training in recognizing and addressing narcissistic abuse and antagonistic relational stress.
If you have spent months or years second-guessing yourself after a relationship with a partner, parent, co-parent, boss, or family member, her work focuses on helping you rebuild self-trust, set healthy boundaries, and reconnect with your authentic self. You can read more on our narcissistic abuse recovery therapy page.
For clients who want to process painful memories in a structured way, Teresa also uses EMDR therapy to help reduce the emotional weight of unresolved trauma. Her DBT training adds practical skills for emotional regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and healthier relationships.
Teresa's guiding belief
Couples Therapy With Teresa
Relationships can be a source of deep connection, and they can also bring misunderstandings and pain. In her work with couples, Teresa draws from the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help partners understand one another, strengthen their emotional connection, improve communication, and handle conflict in healthier ways.
Her approach emphasizes emotional awareness, mutual respect, accountability, and a supportive space where each partner feels heard and valued. Whether you are a couple in Waldo, Mission Hills, or Lee's Summit who feel stuck in the same argument, or partners who simply want to feel closer, Teresa can meet you where you are. You can also meet the rest of our gokc therapy team to see who fits you best.
For Spanish-Speaking Clients and Families
Talking about pain is hard enough. Doing it in a second language can add another layer of effort, and some feelings simply come out more easily in the language you grew up with. Teresa offers therapy in both English and Spanish, so you can choose the language that feels most natural to you, or move between the two if that helps you say what you mean.
This matters for individuals, and it matters for couples and families too. When both partners can speak openly in the language they are most comfortable in, it is easier to be understood. Learn more on our Spanish-language therapy page.
Healing Beyond the Four Walls of an Office
At gokc, we believe the outdoors can be part of healing. Teresa shares that belief. She is particularly interested in incorporating Walk-and-Talk Therapy and nature-based EMDR for clients who feel more comfortable processing their experiences outside a traditional office. For some people, movement, fresh air, and time in nature bring a greater sense of ease and grounding. When clinically appropriate, these approaches can include mindfulness and grounding techniques, always with attention to your comfort and preferences.
