Rebuilding Trust: Couples Counseling in English or Spanish With Teresa Gomez, PLPC

Some hurts do not fade just because time passes. If something has shaken the trust between you and your partner, you are not stuck, and you do not have to carry it in silence. You can start in the language that feels most like home.

Healing in a relationship often looks like this: uneven, a little messy, and still blooming.

Maybe it was something you found out. Maybe it was a promise that was broken, or a pattern of small letdowns that finally added up. Maybe you cannot point to one moment at all, only a steady sense that it is not safe to be fully honest anymore. However it happened, the result is the same. You are in the same home, and there is a gap between you that neither of you knows how to cross.

That gap is exactly what couples counseling in Kansas City is meant to help with. Today we want to introduce you to Teresa Gomez, PLPC, one of the therapists at gokc who works with couples, in English or in Spanish.

When something has broken between you

Trust is built slowly, through hundreds of small moments when you show up for each other. When it breaks, the people in the relationship often react in different ways. One partner may feel hurt, angry, or flooded with questions. The other may feel ashamed, defensive, or desperate to fix it quickly. Both reactions are human, and they can collide in a way that makes things worse.

Hurt, shame, and betrayal are heavy feelings to process, especially when you are processing them in front of the person involved. A lot of couples tell us they do not know how to talk about it without it turning into a fight, or without one person shutting down. That is where having a skilled third person in the room can change things. Counseling gives you a pace and a structure that is hard to create on your own.

Rebuilding trust is not about forgetting, and it is not about forgiving on a deadline. It is about both people being willing to be honest, to listen without needing to defend, and to find out slowly what safety looks like now.

The patterns you brought with you

Another thing that often surprises couples is how much of their conflict has older roots. Each of us learns early, in the family we grow up in, how people handle anger, how affection is shown, who apologizes, who stays quiet, and what happens when someone gets hurt. We carry those lessons into adult relationships, usually without noticing.

You may find that you react to your partner the way you once reacted to a parent or caregiver, even when your partner is not doing anything like that. Or that the two of you learned opposite rules, so one of you believes love means talking everything through and the other believes love means giving each other space. Neither is wrong. They just collide.

Understanding these patterns takes some of the blame out of the room. It lets you stop asking "what is wrong with you?" and start asking "what happened to each of us that makes this so hard?" Many couples find that is where compassion begins.

Teresa brings more than 20 years of experience across nonprofit education, community mental health, and private practice. She holds a master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Avila University and is a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri, practicing under the clinical supervision of Samantha Spencer.

That long road matters. Over two decades, Teresa has worked with individuals and couples facing a wide range of life challenges, including trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, and big life transitions. Her style is compassionate, collaborative, and honest. She works with couples who are processing hurt, shame, and betrayal, and who want to understand the patterns, including those that run back through families, that keep repeating between them.

Teresa also supports women through hormonal mental health concerns such as PCOS, infertility, and menopause. These seasons can put real strain on closeness, communication, and confidence, and it helps to be seen by a counselor who understands them. She sees both individuals and couples, and she is thoughtful about when each approach is the right fit for the people in front of her.

In English, the same idea: some things are simply easier to say, and easier to feel heard, in the language you grew up with. Couples counseling is built on honest conversation. If Spanish is the language where you can say what you really mean, you should not have to translate your pain before you can talk about it.

Some couples are more comfortable in different languages. If that is you, tell us when you reach out and we will talk with you about what would work best for the two of you. If you are searching for terapia de pareja en español en Kansas City, you have found it.

What counseling looks like when trust is shaky

If you are wondering how this works when emotions are raw, here is what couples can generally expect from working with Teresa.

  • A safe pace. You will not be pushed into a conversation before you are ready. Early sessions are about understanding what happened, what each of you is feeling, and what each of you needs.
  • Both voices matter. The goal is not to decide who is the villain. It is for each of you to be heard, and for the hurt to be named honestly.
  • Understanding your patterns. Together you look at how you each learned to handle conflict and closeness, and how those habits show up between you now.
  • Practical tools. Teresa uses evidence-based, skills-focused approaches to help you manage big emotions and communicate more clearly, so a hard moment does not have to become a blowup.
  • A realistic path forward. Some couples rebuild closeness. Others gain clarity about what they need. In either case, you leave with more understanding than you came in with.

No counselor can promise how things will turn out. What counseling can offer is a steadier place to work through it, with someone who has walked alongside many people through hard chapters.

Gentle things to try while you decide

  • Pick a time, not a moment. Hard conversations go better when you choose them ahead of time instead of ambushing each other at the end of a long day.
  • Start with what you need. "I need to feel safe being honest with you" lands differently than "you always lie."
  • Take breaks and return. Stepping away to calm down is not avoidance if you agree on when you will come back.
  • Be patient with the timeline. Trust usually returns in small steps, not one big gesture.

What if we are not sure we want to stay together?

Some couples come in certain that they want to repair things. Others come in unsure, or with one partner leaning in and the other leaning out. If that is you, it does not disqualify you from counseling. Many people find that getting honest in a calm setting is the first time they can really tell what they want.

A counselor is not there to push you toward staying or leaving. The work is to help each of you understand your own feelings, hear your partner's, and make decisions from a clearer place instead of from the heat of the last argument. Whatever you decide, doing it with more understanding and less damage is a gain for everyone involved, including any children in the home.

Hope is not naive

When trust has been broken, hope can feel risky. You may worry that wanting things to get better only sets you up to be hurt again. That caution makes sense, and it is not something to argue yourself out of.

Hope in counseling is more grounded than wishful thinking. It is the belief that how you two relate right now is not the only way it can be, and that with honest work and good support, something steadier can grow. It does not ask you to pretend the hurt did not happen. It asks you to take it seriously, and to build from there at a pace you can live with.

Many couples are surprised to find that the conversations they feared most turn out to be the ones that bring them closer, once the room feels safe enough to have them. If you have been carrying this alone, you do not have to anymore.

Common questions

Can we do couples counseling in Spanish?

Yes. Teresa Gomez offers couples counseling in English or Spanish, in person in Brookside and online for Missouri residents. Terapia de pareja en español está disponible con Teresa.

Can couples counseling help after trust has been broken?

Many couples find counseling helpful during this time because it gives both people a structured place to be honest and be heard. We cannot promise an outcome, but we can offer a steady place to work through it.

What does PLPC mean?

PLPC stands for Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor. It is a trained counselor completing supervised hours on the path to full licensure. Teresa practices under the clinical supervision of Samantha Spencer.

What if only one of us is ready?

That is common. Couples sessions are for both partners, but one person may feel more ready first. Reach out and tell us where you are, and we can talk through what a first step could look like.

A safety note. Couples counseling is not the right fit if one partner is afraid of the other. If that is your situation, you deserve support that keeps you safe. You can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, or call or text 988 if you are in crisis.

Your relationship deserves a fair chance
