Meet Lisa Hoang: A Kansas City Therapist Who Meets You Exactly Where You Are

Lisa Hoang, LMSW, LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and trauma specialist at gokc Healing Center in Kansas City

You've been carrying something for a long time. And you deserve a space where you don't have to explain yourself before you can begin healing.

Maybe it's anxiety that hums underneath everything you do — the kind that doesn't go away even when life looks fine from the outside. Maybe it's a grief you can't quite name, or pain that feels too old and too deep to belong entirely to you. Maybe you're navigating the intersection of identity, culture, and mental health and you just want a therapist who actually gets it.

If any of that sounds familiar, Lisa Hoang might be exactly the person you've been looking for.

Who Is Lisa Hoang?

Lisa Hoang is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and EMDR-trained therapist at gokc Healing Center in Kansas City. She sees clients in person at gokc's Brookside office — Tuesday through Saturday — and via telehealth throughout Missouri and Kansas.

Her specialties include trauma and PTSD, LGBTQ+ affirming care, intergenerational and cultural trauma, anxiety, grief, and identity. She works with teens and adults across the Kansas City metro, including clients in Brookside, Midtown, Westport, Waldo, the Plaza, Overland Park, Prairie Village, and Lee's Summit.

But what makes Lisa stand out isn't just her credentials or her training. It's how she shows up in the room. Lisa's approach is warm, collaborative, and deeply human. She listens. She adapts. She meets you exactly where you are — not where she thinks you should be — and walks alongside you at your pace.

Lisa's Approach: What Therapy Actually Looks Like

One of the most common things people say when they're considering therapy for the first time is: “I don't even know where to start.” That's not a problem with Lisa. Starting is the whole point.

Sessions with Lisa are collaborative from the beginning. She draws on an evidence-based toolkit that includes EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused approaches — all woven together with feminist, multicultural, and strength-based frameworks. She also holds certification as a PEERS provider, with specialized training in social skills and peer relationships, especially helpful for teens and clients navigating neurodivergent experiences.

“There is no true right way, only what feels right for you. You're not too much, and you're not alone.” — Lisa

Who Lisa Works With

Lisa has a particular gift for working with people who feel like they exist between worlds — people who've spent years navigating spaces where they didn't quite fit, or where fitting meant leaving part of themselves at the door.

  • People who identify as LGBTQ+ and want a therapist who is genuinely affirming — not just well-meaning. Lisa doesn't just tolerate your identity. She centers it.
  • Second-generation immigrants navigating the space between family expectations and their own sense of self.
  • People carrying intergenerational or ancestral trauma — pain passed down through family systems before you had words for it.
  • Teens and young adults figuring out who they are, where they belong, and how to cope with the pressures that come with both.
  • People on the autism spectrum looking for a therapist who understands neurodivergent experiences and won't try to reshape who they are.
  • Anyone dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, or pain that doesn't have a clean label.

You don't have to fit neatly into one of these categories to work with Lisa. You just have to be ready — even a little — to start.

Where to Begin

Lisa sees clients at gokc's Brookside office at 6155 Oak St, Suite E-5 in Kansas City and via telehealth for clients throughout Missouri and Kansas. Session fee is $120 per individual session. Sliding scale options are available, and Lisa can provide a superbill for out-of-network insurance reimbursement.

The first step is a free 15-minute consultation — no pressure, no commitment. Just a conversation to see if it feels right. You don't have to have it all figured out before you reach out. That's what therapy is for.
